After working at a homeless drop-in center for 4 years, I’ve met a lot of inspiring folks that have helped me in my recovery more than they know.

Out of all the things I learned while working at the center, there are 3 main takeaways that I believe are the most important.

I’ve learned that mental health is for everyone. Addiction does not discriminate and stigma and shame can really get in the way of someone seeking for help.

Childhood trauma is also a major player in addictive behaviour in adults.

Many of the folks I’ve met, had something terrible happen to them when they were a child; young and unable to protect themselves.

They all shared something in common and it was pain caused by a void in their childhood.

Some grew up with an alcoholic parent, many came from single parent homes.

Most often, they all experienced some kind of neglect or abuse.

At the center, we spent a lot of time working through those traumas through many different kinds of therapeutic activities.

Art therapy was huge within our community and there was one person who loved paint splatter artwork.

He used art as his recovery and every piece of artwork he created came from the emotions that lived inside of him.

This set of bookmarks that I created at my Etsy shop was inspired by him.

Meeting him on my own road to recovery really opened my eyes to what people can become and accomplish when they are their true selves.

His story and his triumphs have inspired me to stay sober myself.

For me personally, the process of creating has helped me a lot in my own recovery.

My brain craved a place to escape and hobbies like creating printable bookmarks for recovery became the perfect getaway.

Without substances, I can lose track of time and space and truly enjoy creating recovery products that can help others on their journey as well.
