What can our feline friends teach us about life?

Were they created purely for our companionship or were they sent here to this universe to be the greatest teachers there are; the ones who teach without speaking?

Cats have lived by us for over ten thousand years and have adapted and thrived as we evolved through time.

They’ve seen it all and they’re much wiser than we give them credit for.

Not to mention, our furry friends know all our deepest darkest secrets.

12 Wise Life Lessons I Learned From My Four Cats

Yes, you read that right. Four cats.

If you’re here reading this post, you’re probably a cat lover. Yay!

You might be wondering why on Earth I have four cats or you could be just as coocoo as me and have a few kitties of your own.

Sometimes I wonder how I ended up with so many cats also but truth is, there’s always room in my heart for more.

Each one of my cats have very different personalities and they each have taught me many life lessons throughout the years and I appreciate that.

In this post, I’ll go over 12 of the best life lessons I have learned from my four cats.

1) They’re confident

Confidence is a quality at the top of any cat’s list. They really do believe in themselves and their abilities.

They have such determination and conviction that they’re going to be able to jump somewhere that seems impossible to the human eye.

Yet they do it anyway, without a single doubt in their mind.

Many times we don’t achieve our goals or even have the courage to strive for them because we don’t have the confidence in ourselves.

And that’s no fault of your own.

See, when you were a child, you had tremendous confidence but as you got older, other people started to reflect their own self doubts onto you and little by little, your confidence got dinged each time.

In life, we really have to ignore all that outside noise and listen to the voice we had when we were children, telling us that we can do anything.

2) They know what they want

My cats are crystal clear on what they want, like a specific toy or something shiny that’s dangling on my purse.

When they see something they want, they get laser focused and stop at nothing until they get it.

Most of the time in life, we’re not clear on our goals so we’re just drifting through life.

Next thing you know, one whole year goes by and then 5 years and then 10 years.

And then one day you look back wondering where has all the time gone?

If we could be more like a cat and set our eyes on a target and get laser focused, we’d get to where we want to go much faster.

3) They’re super persistent

My cats are so persistent, it’s actually inspiring.

I absolutely LOVE how they just never give up sometimes and I really wish I had that super quality in me.

Even if you say “No” a thousand times, cats will not listen and they’ll keep going after it. In fact, it’s like they want to prove to you that they’re right.

So many times in life, we get rejected and we immediately give up.

We think “this must not be for me” or we say things to ourselves like “I don’t deserve this. I’m not good enough”.

The successful people we hear about all have one quality in common and that’s persistence.

No matter how many times they get rejected, they find another way and they keep going.

4) They don’t trust so easily

All four of my cats are rescues, so they’ve got some kind of story that made them the way they are.

Cats are careful about who they let in and the pace at which they do it too. They have to make sure you aren’t going to hurt them.

Sometimes in life, we trust people too quickly instead of listening to our intuition. We’ve all had that gut feeling when we knew something wasn’t right.

If we went against that feeling, we were almost always making the wrong decision.

If we were more mindful of who we let into our circle, we could protect ourselves from being hurt.

5) Their love must be earned

Similar to slowly building trust with cats, we must also earn their love.

They clearly show us that not everyone deserves it and only a few are worthy of their love.

Same with forgiveness, sometimes they hold a grudge and we have to earn their forgiveness.

How many times have you loved someone over and over again even though they didn’t deserve you?

How many times have you forgave someone only to have them hurt you again?

Cats can teach us that not everyone is worthy of our love and to be mindful of sharing our hearts to only those who will love us back and treat us right.

6) They don’t care what anyone thinks

I love how cats really don’t care about what anyone thinks. If you’ve heard the term “catitude” you might know what I mean.

They have this self identity they walk around with, shoulders back and heads held up high.

They don’t care what you think of them and they’re not begging for your approval.

As humans, we care too much about what other people think about us.

Here’s the truth, nobody cares.

At the end of our life, you only have your memories, your contributions and your experiences.

What a shame it would be to not live our lives to the fullest because we were worried about what other people might think of us.

7) They’re stoic

Out of my four cats, one of them is a handful (Momo). She’s an energizer bunny that never turns off and she’s always somewhere she’s not supposed to be.

She’s so energetic that she was actually returned to the shelter two days after the previous family tried to adopt her.

To say she’s a handful is an understatement.

Anyway, when she’s running around the house, ninja kicking off walls and knocking everything over, my other 3 cats are calmly watching her, unimpressed, grooming themselves away.

Their stoicism is something we could all learn from; how to remain calm in hectic situations.

This can help us think clearly while still make good decisions under pressure.

A skill you must learn if you want to make good decisions in life and in business.

8) They go full force

Cats are notorious for doing zoomies.

There are plenty of hilarious cat videos online of them running around like bananas chasing something invisible.

When they want something, they will go full force. I believe that’s how we should approach life as well.

If you know that you want something, freaking go for it and don’t stop.

Think of that analogy of a plane taking off a runway, it needs to go full speed to make it up into the air. After that it’s all autopilot and you ride with the momentum.

So don’t dabble. Make a decision and take massive action.

What greater gift than the love of a cat

9) They take care of their family

Once a cat has accepted you as a part of their family, they really take care of you and show you so much love.

Luna absolutely adores me and that feeling is so special.

The moment I saw her at the shelter, I knew she was the one and I think she felt the same way too.

You know what they say, “you don’t adopt the cat, they adopt you”.

She loves grooming me and cuddling together to sleep.

When I got pregnant with my daughter, she was always by my belly and would never leave my side.

Now that my baby girl is born, she has accepted her into our family, grooming and massaging her and running to her when she cries.

It’s absolutely adorable.

10) They’re full of curiosity

Cats are such curious creatures. If you have anything new they haven’t seen before, you can be sure to find your cat observing every part of it.

Curiosity is the one quality you need in life to be champion. Being curious will cause you to continuously grow and better your skills.

It will make you ask questions and seek for answers.

Remember that if you’re not growing, you’re dying and one of the ways to keep growing in life is to always stay curious.

11) They know how to enjoy the view

How many times have you passed by a house and saw a cat sitting by the window?

Cats love to observe the world as it goes by.

They know how to slow down and enjoy the view while soaking in the sunshine.

They always seem to find the best spots to get nice and cozy also.

I love watching my cats relax in the warm sun, slowly blinking and peacefully people watching.

They can teach us to slow down and smell the roses. They show us how to really appreciate the little things in life and soak in each moment.

12) Self care is their top priority

Cats love grooming themselves.

In addition to keeping their fur clean and regulating their body temperature, cats groom themselves as a way to self-soothe.

As humans, we spend so much time focusing on other people and other things that our own self care gets neglected.

This is especially true if you’re a mother taking care of your babies or you’re a father providing security for the family.

In the process of providing for the people we love, our needs often get put last. In fact, it should always be a top priority.

You cannot pour from an empty cup and you cannot give to others what you don’t have yourself.

Make sure to take care of yourself first because when you do, you’re giving the world the best version of you.
