“Going with the flow” is a very popular saying that we often hear but just because it’s popular doesn’t mean that it’s a good thing!

Why “Going with the Flow” is a Bad Idea

It may seem like a good idea at first and you might feel like you’re a free spirit living spontaneously but in reality, you’re actually going through life without a road map.

There’s a popular quote by Benjamin Franklin, “if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”

You should always have a general plan of where you’re going. Notice how I say “general” because in reality, life will happen and things will change!

So when that does, you can course correct but at least you’re still on the right path.

The Importance of a Plan

A well-thought-out plan will give you direction, purpose and clarity. You will make better decisions with a plan because you have had the time to think through things.

Without a plan, you will lack focus and you might be unsure of your next steps. A clear roadmap will allow you to stay organized and on track towards your goals.

A plan will also give you a sense of structure that can help you navigate through life’s challenges because trust me, there will be trying times.

Ultimately, having a solid plan in place is like building a strong foundation that will help you live more intentionally and purposefully.

Getting Better Outcomes in Life

When you know where you’re going and you have direction with a well thought-out plan, you will set yourself up for better results in life.

When you start to achieve your life’s goals, whether big or small, you will start to feel more fulfilled.

Life will begin to be more meaningful to you and you will be living a more rewarding life.

Finding Fulfillment Through Purpose and Direction

Just like a ship that needs a course to follow to reach its destination, you also need purpose and direction in your life to navigate through the challenges and uncertainties.

When you have a clear sense of where you’re headed and why, you are better equipped to stay focused, motivated, and resilient in the face of obstacles.

When you align your actions with our values and aspirations, you can create a sense of fulfillment that goes beyond just going with the flow.

This allows you to make a positive impact on yourself and the people around you.

Final Thoughts

Our culture has praised the YOLO (you only live once) lifestyle and it’s so easy to overlook having a solid plan for life.

While ‘going with the flow’ may have its time and place, it certainly can’t be the only way to live life.

To live with intention means having structure, direction, and purpose in achieving your goals.

Set yourself up for success and better outcomes in life by NOT going with the flow for everything.
