6 Ways On How To Get Motivated Everyday

Your brain is designed to keep you safe and comfortable so it’s no surprise that motivating yourself to do the necessary things can seem like moving mountains on Earth.

A year from now, you will wish you had started today.

You’re half way done your work day and you’ve been thinking about all the things on your to-do list.

You’ve mentally planned everything out and all seems to be going great (in your mind at least).

Come 5pm, you’re off work and suddenly you’re pooped!

You’re so tired you didn’t even make it to the grocery store and end up grabbing take out or eating frozen dinners.

And then you pass out thinking to yourself,

“I’ll do it tomorrow…” 🥱

Sound familiar?

We’ve all been there. I know I have.

Sometimes passing out as soon as I get home with a sink full of dishes to wake up to in the morning.

How lovely.

It got me thinking,

How do people have so much energy to go to the gym after work?

How do they work on their side hustle after a 9-5 plus fighting through traffic?

Where do they get this energy from?

How do they stay SO motivated?

After years of crashing after work and feeling bad about not doing the things I said I was going to do, I knew something had to change.

A few small discoveries and a change in perspective have made all the difference.

Here are a few tips to help you get out of the rut and start keeping the promises you make to yourself!

1) Focus On One Thing

When we think about change, we can easily be overwhelmed. There may be many areas of your life you want to improve.

Like eating healthier, getting more exercise, sleeping earlier, or watching less TV.

When we try to do all these things at once, our brains go into overdrive with complexity and shuts down.

You get something called, paralysis by analysis.

Instead of trying to find motivation to change ALL these areas, choose one and focus all your energy on that one task.

Let’s say you want to exercise more, then start with going for a run once a week and do that until it’s become a part of your lifestyle.

Then you can slowly move up to twice a week, three times a week and more.

When you’ve consistently gone for a few weeks, you’ll feel motivated to do more and then you can add in another area you want to work on.

2) Exercise

Working out has so many health benefits it’s like magic.

Especially now, during the pandemic, working out has been crucial to my mental health.

One of the main things exercise does for keeping you motivated is it continues to give you energy after your workout.

Building muscle and cardio endurance will give you the physical strength you need to tackle your to-do list like a pro.

Remember, all actions require emotion.

When you feel good, you do good things.

So workout to keep your energy level high and motivation will be a byproduct.

3) Do Some Renovating

Kind of but not literally!

A book by James Clear, Atomic Habits, talks about redesigning your environment to help you build new habits.

Let’s say your goal is to read more books this year but find it hard to motivate yourself to do it.

One thing you can do is place a book on your nightstand or on top of your pillow so every night it’s there and easily accessible for you to read one page before bed.

Finding motivation to change is hard enough but having to get out of bed after you’ve gotten in bed to get your book is even harder.

Another way is to carry a book with you all the time so when you’re on transit or you’ve got 15 minutes left on your lunch, you can read instead of scrolling through social media.

Make it easy for yourself visually and physically, so motivating yourself to read isn’t as difficult.

4) Gain Momentum

When a plane takes off on a runway, it needs to go full force at 110%. After that it’s cruise control.

Same thing goes for your life.

When you start to make a change, having momentum gives you motivation to keep going.

How do you get momentum?

Be consistent.

If you’ve ever gone to the gym 3 times a week for a month and suddenly miss a week, it seems almost impossible to get back into it again.

And slowly you start to miss another week and another week…

To stay motivated, don’t miss more than one day.

Keep a mental note and get back on track as soon as possible.

5) Celebrate Small Wins

We live in a society where we are praised to work long hours and live off 4 hours of sleep like you’re some kind of superhuman.

The only issue is that it doesn’t last long before you experience burn out.

Life becomes mundane and you feel like a hamster running on a wheel with no end in sight.

For all you go-getters out there, chasing your dreams and sacrificing everything for it, celebrating every small victory you achieve gives you motivation to keep going.

It makes you feel like you’re moving forward and getting closer to your goals.

Your brain capitalizes on your reward centers and craves more of it.

So celebrate your milestones no matter how small they are.

6) Have an Accountability Buddy

Here’s a big secret: you must share your goals with someone.

Having someone hold you accountable is a big factor in keeping you motivated.

Especially on the days when you’re not motivated yourself.

Now, this person should have a genuine interest in helping you achieve your goals and being your ultimate cheerleader.

You could have one person you share all your goals with or a few different people for each area; one for fitness, one for saving money, one for faith.

Psychologically this works wonders because most of the time, we do things FOR other people.

Rarely, do we do things solely for our own benefit.

Use the love you have for your partner, your parents, your community and your children as your biggest motivator.

DO IT FOR THEM.

I hope these tips are able to help you find more motivation in your everyday life.

Again, don’t attempt all these ideas at once, pick one or two to start and see what works for you and build from there!
