Reading is an activity that can really help you on your road to recovery.

As someone who suffered from substance abuse, my brain craved a place to escape and books became the perfect getaway.

You can surround yourself with positive thoughts and find “mentors” and “new friends” within books that can motivate you to change.

This bookmark theme was inspired by the dark side of recovery, as some of you may know.

The road to recovery can feel hollow, but the journey will make you whole.

I think most people who have been or are on their healing journey would agree with me that there’s some sort of darkness that comes with it.

In a way, you’re being guided towards the light, and it should feel like a bright journey ahead but that’s not always the case.

Recovery can be a very lonely road.

It can feel very isolating, like nobody understands you.

Like nobody can feel what you’re feeling inside, the pain and the happiness all at the same time.

Being alone in the dark with nothing but your thoughts can be a scary place.

For me, that was a place I used to run from. Throughout my recovery journey, I learned that the reason I ran was that I lacked control.

I didn’t develop the skillset of controlling my thoughts yet, and so it controlled me.

And that was not how I wanted to live.

As a part of my recovery, I focused heavily on learning how to control my thoughts through meditation.

I also focused a lot on putting certain messages in my mind, mainly from books. I learned that what you put in is what you put out.

I chose to read books that would emulate the person I wanted to be and the life that I wanted.

As my brain slowly rewired and my thoughts began to change, I felt like a flower blooming in the dark.

I saw the positive things I was doing as rays of sunlight shining into my heart, and even without copious amounts of sun, somehow, this little rose inside of me still bloomed.

If you’re feeling alone right now on your healing journey, know that I’m rooting for you!
