If you’re like me, mornings were non-existent in my life for a certain number of years.
I was definitely a night owl.
In the morning, I used to feel like I got hit by a truck while trying to figure out what planet I was on.
Most people don’t put in enough time to master their mornings and it is definitely no easy task.
What I’ve learnt is that the first 20 minutes of your day dictate the rest of your day. So it’s important to pay attention to what goes on in those 20 minutes.
Below is a list of things I do for my morning routine, maybe some of these things will help make your morning just a bit brighter!

What I do for an Amazing Morning Routine
1) 30 Deep Breaths
The moment I open my eyes, I thank the universe for giving me another day and give a great BIG smile! 😀
Then,
- 10 Deep Breaths
- Say 1 thing I’m grateful for
- 10 Deep Breaths
- Say 1 thing I’m grateful for that hasn’t happened yet
- 10 Deep Breaths
The reason I say 1 thing that hasn’t happened yet is so I can prime my mind to think of the future right when I start my day.
2) Drink Water
Before I do anything else, I drink a full bottle of water. I fill my water bottle every single night and keep it right beside my bed so it’s ready for me when I wake up. If you’re looking for a great quality water bottle, here is a really good one.
This rehydrates my body and helps get my digestive system moving. During the night while you sleep, your body is filtering out toxins, so drinking a glass of water helps push all those toxins out.
If you’re not used to drinking lots of water first thing in the morning, you might find it hard but overtime it gets easier and tastier!
You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine

3) Gratitude Affirmations Video
Next, I put on a video from YouTube by Bob Baker, “Morning Gratitude Affirmations | Listen for 21 Days”.
It’s a short video where he recites simple and positive “I am” affirmations cultivating a strong sense of gratitude.
I love this video and have been watching it every day for over a year now! He also has tons of affirmation and meditation recordings you can download for free here.
4) Short Simple Exercises
Next, I do small exercises to get my blood flowing and heart pumping.
- Stretches
- 25 squats
- 1 minute plank
- 25 squats
5) Write Out Affirmations
This part is my favourite; writing affirmations.
Affirmations are statements you say to yourself to envision how you want your life to be.
It can help you achieve future goals, sustain current habits or change your personality completely.
These powerful “I am” statements work because they target your conscious and subconscious mind by strengthening neurological pathways and creating new ones.
6) Write Out Goals
Writing my goals in my journal first thing in the morning is also another one of my favourites.
- 3 things I’m going to accomplish for the day (highest priority; if I don’t do anything else, these are a must)
- 3 things I’m going to accomplish for the month
- 3 things I’m going to accomplish for the year
This is powerful because it gets your mind in the right state.
Instead of watching the news or listening to mindless radio talk, you’re controlling your mind to think of the future and subconsciously your actions will follow.
7) Self Development Audio
Last but not least, I put on a personal development video as I’m getting ready for the day.
This could be of any topic:
- Goal setting
- Motivation
- Communication
- Finance
- Anything educational and positive!
